Looking for a backpacking vacation on a grand scale? It doesn’t get much bigger than the USA – towering skyscrapers, big burgers, larger than life performers, vast deserts, seemingly endless golden beaches, big cities and even a grand canyon.
Anyone who has watched an American movie or two will have some familiarity with New York City. Most New York backpackers will find themselves staying in a Manhattan hostel amongst the world famous setting of yellow cabs, steam rising from below the streets, bustling pedestrians and neon signs. If simply taking in the atmosphere while enjoying a coffee is not enough, pay a visit to some of NYC’s famous landmarks such as the statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park and the Empire State Building.
New York is a must, but there are so many things to do in the USA and famous places to visit that it may not be possible to fit in everything in single backpacking trip and it’s certainly not possible for this scribe to detail everything in a single page layout so here’s a few highlights.
- Hollywood and the golden beaches of LA.
- The hotels and casinos of Las Vegas.
- The restaurants and hills of San Francisco in California and its many attractions including the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.
- The Grand Canyon in northern Arizona.
Given the size of the USA , the easiest way to get around is by plane, but it is also the most expensive so if you have the time, many backpackers recommend car hire as the best way to get from hostel to hostel in the USA.
Expect backpackers accommodation in the USA to be of the highest international standard. USA Hostels is a small chain of hostels with hostels in San Francisco, Hollywood, San Diego and Las Vegas. Hostelling International USA has the largest network of hostels in America with quality backpacking accommodation spread across the country.
